On Tuesday February 9th at M.T.Bellies, 15 hungry contestants gathered to raise money for the United Way and wage war against a completely fully loaded 2 pound Burger Beast.
In a first to finish race, Joe (the Animal) Labenski munched his way to become the 2010 Niagara Giant Eater Champion. Joe’s winning time of 13 minutes 8 seconds was well ahead of second place finisher Jon Villifana and third place John Robins. The United Way of South Niagara, in a supporting role, was able to gobble up $3000 with this fun’ raising event.
Many people made this second ever event a chomping success. Our local ‘go to guys’ pitched in cash, prizes and or products to defer costs and help make this a financial success. Big MT thanks to the ever generous Rick “the Sausage Nawtzi” Lowes from Country Corner Market, Clark “called to the bar” Peddle, Barrister, Trevor Marsh from TMCA Financial, Rick “I just want to change your oil” Groom from Jiffy Lube, Don Wininger from Spritz Creative, Todd Huson of FM Windows, Stephen Billyard from Lochness Links, Mike Dibari from Northside Business Park and finally Jeff and Doug from Online Electronics.
Thanks to our food suppliers Saputo Cheese, Strub’s Pickles, Heinnz, Olymel, Cavendish and Rycott Foodeservice.
These monetary and in kind products bolstered the bottom line. The promotional efforts of Peter Allen 91.7 Giant FM gave us the awareness to draw contestants from all over region. All these guys are great Team players.
Scores of people turned out to cheer and support their favourite eaters. Fun and funny times were had by all. Andreas Gmoser, a Welland Professional Fire Fighter, drew the most fans and filled a bountiful tip jar. A surprise cheque of $500 from the fire fighters association at the wrap up made the whole night a warm & fuzzy experience. What a wonderful generous gift.
